Silent illumination chan (the pronuciation in manderin is Mo-zhao Ch'an默照禪 ) is one of chinese buddhist meditation methods, it was unfolded in the chines sang(宋) dynasty ( twelfth centry) by ch'an master Hung-chih Cheng-chueh(宏智正覺1091~1157) and Chen-hsieh Ch'ing-liao(真歇清了1088~1151). The ch'an method was later transmitted to Japan by Dogen(永平道元1200~1253) founder of S
oto(曹洞宗) and transformed to "only sitting"(只管打坐). In modern china silent illumination ch'an is renewed by Master Sheng Yen(聖嚴法師).
